Yet again we see the Saviors struggling to keep things going, and here apparently roaming the pathways setting traps for unwary travellers (oh, Henry, have you learned nothing from your surrogate parents?). A little like the tale of Eugene of Rosita this week (see below), it at first seemed to serve little purpose, and indeed rarely came to life until the end. Outside of that storyline, there was Carol, off on a supply run with Henry (Matt Lintz played the aged-up version of the stick-swishing lad). And there's more creative drive on show in sending the newbies elsewhere than just letting them in with no arguments. It was at least interesting to see what Alexandria has evolved into – employing a council to decide matters such as dealing with new arrivals. Even if our reasoning was for one of sheer effort trying to keep them all in our head rather than security reasons. We were tempted to agree with Michonne – do we really want new people around. With the time jump that ended last week's episode continued here, we're introduced to the new characters who will share at least some of the show's increasingly crowded screen time. But did the show truly need to saddle her with The Cowboy Toy Of Memory? This is not a series known for its subtlety when it comes to making points or expressing emotions, but that was particularly egregious. Sure, we have the compelling likes of Michonne, with Danai Gurira as always acting the hell out of material that deserved another pass or two. It's not one that Who Are You Now? adequately manages to overcome. And though it has always been about more than just the lawman-turned-leader, the void to fill is a considerable one. The more people they add to the ranks the better because the Whisperers are going to be a force to be reckoned with if the size of the recent herds is any indication of how big their clan really is. It’s even more essential since we know that the Whisperers are out there nearby somewhere. The fact that people like Negan still exist is a very real threat, and vetting anyone they allow within the doors of their sanctuary is very important. Alexandria and Michonne must decide if they will keep this small group of drifters despite the fact that Judith seems to have already decided to help these strangers. We got to meet the small group that Judith saved from the walkers at the end of Rick’s last episode. The Survivors encounter unfamiliar faces outside the safety of their community’s walls and must decide whether or not this new group can be trusted. While there is no question that Judith is more badass then any of us could have imagined, I wonder how prepared she is for the Whisperers.
And let’s not forget that ultimately, Michonne is the one who raised her. If she is a little sheriff in the making, it doesn’t come as a surprise since her father and brother were born leaders, and it would only be right that she follows in their footsteps. Judith Grimes, however, is older and may also have a hand in what goes on around town. While it looks like Michonne has taken hold of the responsibilities at Alexandria (as per AMC’s preview), what her new focus is for the town is still a mystery. Tonight on The Walking Dead we find out how well things are going after six years for all of the people that clung to Rick Grimes’ every word and are now left without someone to direct and lead their goals for the sake of survival.
